Every state has its unique history, likewise, every town and city tells a story. Let's focus on the Great Lake State, Michigan, but, more specifically, the town of Holland. Mainly known for its yearly Tulip Festival, Holland is a scenic town in western Michigan. As you might imagine, the town owes itself to the Dutch settlers who first arrived in the area around 1847. Being well over 150 years old, this small town has a lot of history surrounding it, and here are some of the best attractions.
1. Nelis' Dutch Village
In 1910, Harry Nelis was tasked by his father to move to America in search of good farmland. He started in Missouri, but by 1911 he moved further north, eventually ending up in the Dutch community of Holland.
In the '50s, the village was created as a place to buy tulip bulbs and souvenirs. Today, Nelis’ Dutch Village is a theme park with family rides, a petting zoo, and shops.
2. Windmill Island Gardens
The Windmill Island Gardens is a park with a touch of old-world charm, and with a unique centerpiece. The windmill was built in 1761 and is from Krommenie, Netherlands. Its name is "de Zwaan," Dutch for "peaceful bird," and it's the oldest operating windmill in the country.
The whole family will enjoy this antique carousel from the Netherlands. There is also a pipe organ gifted from Amsterdam after the end of WWII.
Don't just visit for the history. Since the town is known for its Tulip Festival, the park is full of blooms every Spring!
3. The Holland Museum
The Holland Museum is the last visit on the list and features artwork and other artifacts. This museum is impactful because it showcases the local culture and features donations from the families of the town's past.
One of the most unique exhibits is the Klok, which was showcased at the 1939 World's Fair.
It runs on the first Saturday of every month at noon. It's a dazzling show thanks to the Klok's many moving parts - this is one attraction you really have to see in person!
There's even more to see and do in Holland, so take a trip back in time and visit the remnants of the Dutch settlers who built this town to be what it is today.
