You might think that fairies are reserved for children and fantasy books, but one visit to the Traverse City Fairy Trails will surely change your mind. Nestled away along the Cedar Cathedral Trail at Grand Traverse Commons, this series of tiny fairy homes is truly whimsical — and will enchant visitors of all ages.
The Fairy Trails of Traverse City opened in May 2016 as part of a collaborative project by two local organizations that promote creativity and imagination: Life and Whim and ELF (Eat Learn Frolic).
The fairy trails can be accessed near The Village at Grand Traverse Commons, with a trailhead situated near the water tower adjacent to the ELF building.
Once you step onto the trail, the real magic begins. Children and adults will be charmed to discover tiny homes and buildings for fairies — quaint little dwellings that are perfectly sized for the dainty creatures.
Every construction along the trail is made entirely of natural materials, which simply adds to the charm and peacefulness of the area. You’ll be delighted by flower petal windows, sawdust lanes, and pine needle rooftops.
If your creative spark is ignited, you’re encouraged to build a fairy home of your own. The guidelines are simple: use materials that come from nature (shells, stones, bark, and leaves, among others) and show respect for the other people (and fairies!) you might encounter along the way.
