There’s no doubt about it: we Detroiters are a strong bunch of folks. Whether we’re rebuilding, regrouping, or simply re-imagining, there’s a certain strength that comes along with life in the Motor City. If you’re wondering what gives us this tough edge, read on to learn more about why we’ve garnered so much strength.
It’s no secret that Detroit’s past has been dotted with difficulties. From financial woes to all sorts of social issues, the Motor City has certainly dealt with a great deal of pain throughout the years. But these difficulties have only served to make us stronger, and we always learn from our mistakes.
After all, we’re home to the Detroit Lions, who have never even appeared in a Super Bowl. When your hometown team always manages to disappoint, you can’t help but develop a thick skin. Losing is something we’re certainly used to, so it’s nearly impossible to permanently knock us down.
Each winter, our temperatures dip to seemingly unbearable new lows, and the arrival of snowfall makes life in the Motor City pretty tough during colder months. But we’ve dealt with this frigid reality for years, and we can even handle venturing outdoors without a coat if the need arises!
Let’s be honest: the roads in and around Detroit aren’t necessarily the best. We’re used to constant construction on the highways and plenty of potholes throughout our entire state. Because of our familiarity with less-than-smooth driving conditions, we can always handle a few bumps in the road.
Every Detroiter knows that people from outside the city are equipped with plenty of anti-Detroit ideas. If there’s an insult about our city, we’ve certainly heard it more than once. Whether we’re being harassed for our past, made fun of for our multitude of abandoned properties, or even angrily blamed for problems throughout the state, we know how to respond and deal with naysayers.
Our struggles haven’t left us completely void of hope. We Detroiters have worked hard to rebuild our city, both figuratively and literally, over the years. From renovations to new constructions to plenty of community-building initiatives, Detroit is a city on the mend, and this certainly makes us tougher.
Here in Detroit, our past is a constant reminder of the mistakes we’ve made, and we work hard to avoid making these mistakes again. By learning about our history and working tirelessly to understand the pitfalls we’ve encountered previously, we’ve built a tough armor for ourselves and our city.
Detroit is a place of welcoming. No matter who you are, where you’re originally from, or what you believe, you’ll find somewhere to fit in here in the Motor City. We truly believe that our diversity gives us strength, and we’re proud to have input from all sorts of people and groups as we work to improve our beautiful city.
We remain strong because we’re absolutely worthy of this strength! After all, Detroit is home to some of the most amazing accomplishments of the last century. From our automotive prowess to the countless Motown stars who hail from Detroit, our city is overflowing with accomplishments. We’re eternally proud of where we come from, and this pride continues to build us up.
