The Historic Small Town Near Detroit That Everyone Should Visit At Least Once
Detroit itself is overflowing with fantastic history, but there’s something to be said for escaping the city now and then for a bit of discovery in its surrounding areas. When you’re ready to learn about one of the most unique small towns in the Metro Detroit area, look no further than Manchester.
Manchester is located approximately one hour from downtown Detroit by car.
Founded in the 1820s, Manchester certainly lives up to its reputation as a historic spot in the Great Lakes State. The village is named for Manchester, New York.
For a portion of its early history, Manchester was in competition with a neighboring settlement called Soulesville. By 1867, the two settlements had merged under the Manchester name.
Manchester’s location along the River Raisin made it an ideal settlement spot, as founders hoped to take advantage of water power. Today, the river remains a focal point of the area.
As the village grew, an influx of German immigrants settled in the area. This gave way to plenty of farming, the development of a tight-knit community, and a sense of culture throughout Manchester.
Modern-day visitors will feel as if they’ve stepped back in time. Despite its modernization, Manchester maintains an air of history and an "old-town charm" that permeates the village.
For over 60 years, Manchester has hosted its annual Chicken Broil, during which residents cook and serve upwards of 14,000 delicious chicken dinners. Talk about a tasty tradition!
Throughout town, historical markers abound. From a fascinating blacksmith museum to a historic cemetery on Washington Street, there’s plenty to see in this delightful village.
The Manchester Area Historical Society even holds meetings that remain open to the public. Visitors and locals alike are encouraged to contribute to the area’s historical maintenance.
