Massachusetts is home to plenty of abandoned spots, but few of them are open for public exploration. That's what makes this easy hike through the woods to an abandoned train tunnel so cool. If you feel like a brisk walk (and don’t mind the dark), read on to learn how you can hike to this awesome abandoned train tunnel.
Editor's Note: Since publication, this train tunnel is closed for repairs and is not open to the public.
Not many people know that there’s actually a three-mile trail in central Massachusetts that will take you right through the abandoned Clinton Rail Tunnel.
The tunnel itself is about 0.2 miles long and was built in 1903 for the then-booming Central Massachusetts Railroad. The railroad service was struggling by the 1930s, however. The tunnel was abandoned by the 1950s. The tracks were ripped from the earth and the tunnel was left to the forces of nature.
Today, the tunnel is totally open to the public and a great spot to explore. It will take you around 15-20 minutes to reach the tunnel from the start of the trail.
The tunnel is actually in pretty good shape for its age. Other than some fallen branches and brush, it seems to be largely intact. You don’t have to worry about crumbling masonry or huge potholes.
The hike to this tunnel will take you under 20 minutes depending on your walking speed. However, you can continue to walk the trail beyond the tunnel to extend the fun and take in some of the natural beauty of the area. Be sure to bring a flashlight and some waterproof shoes!
Finding this tunnel is actually really easy. Start off by heading to the Wachusett Reservoir dam and parking at the pull-off there.
Head off on foot northeast along Route 62 (the left side) until you see the remains of a stone trestle poking out of the Nashua River on the right.
When you reach the trestle, follow the trail that extends to the right. The tunnel entrance is less than 100 feet away.
This is a great outdoor activity for hikers of all ages and skill levels. Click here for an interactive map of the tunnel’s location. The railroad tunnel is located in Clinton, Massachusetts.
While the tunnel and trail themselves are open to the public, there is private property nearby. Please respect all "no trespassing" signs and keep to the trail. If you’re looking for more great hikes in Massachusetts, check out our list of some of the best here.
