Massachusetts is lousy with gorgeous state parks and meandering trails through the woods, but this spot in Hingham is something special. Offering everything from craggy coastline to blooming riverside meadows, you’ll fall in love with this seaside gem.
World’s End is a 251-acre coastal nature preserve in Hingham. There’s a bit of everything in this park, from saltwater marshes patroled by long-legged coastal birds to red cedar groves and wild blueberry thickets.
Tucked between the Weir River and Hingham Harbor, the park’s meandering, tree-lined paths were actually designed as carriage roads by acclaimed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted in the 1890s. Though the land was never fully developed, it was once considered as a potential site for the United Nations Headquarters.
Don’t be fooled by the name – World’s End is actually just a stone’s throw from Boston. In fact, the capital’s glittering skyline can be spotted over the harbor. It’s only 15 miles away, making this park a prime destination for restless urbanites.
This park is a great option for casual hikers and anyone simply looking for a memorable stroll with a view. With 4.5-miles of wide trails and twisting footpaths, you’ll be immersed in nature without feeling lost in the woods.
There are plenty of benches dotted around the park where you can soak up the views or spread a picnic lunch. The park also offers public restrooms and a drinking water fountain. Plan to spend at least two hours here, and consider allowing yourself extra time to find parking if you visit on the weekend.
Wildlife enthusiasts will be in heaven here, as the park's carefully maintained coastal grasslands are positively bustling with birds and other creatures. Keep an eye out for butterflies, too!
Whether you’re looking for a quick escape from the urban tumult or somewhere to wander for hours in sight of the sea, World’s End may just be one of the dreamiest hiking spots in Massachusetts.
