I am generally someone who prefers the hustle and bustle of busy city living, but every so often I think it would be nice to move to a quiet, rural part of the state. A quaint place where the people are friendly, the driving is easy, and gorgeous outdoor spots are numerous. I consider myself so fortunate to live in a state that has such a wonderful balance of busy urban spots and peaceful small towns. For now, I am very happy to live in my current city, but If I ever decide to pull the plug on urban living, I know just where I will be headed.
Sutton, Massachusetts is a small town that is located in the Blackstone Valley. Although the city of Worcester is about ten miles away, Sutton definitely has a small-town feel. According to the 2020 United States Census, under 10,000 people reside in the town.
Sutton is about 40 square miles, and within this space are some wondrous outdoor recreation spots. Purgatory Chasm State Park
is one of these. The park has numerous hiking trails that lead to majestic rock formations.
Shaw Farm is another recreational park that has open fields and walking trails. It is a beautiful spot to view wildflowers.
Marion’s Camp is a great place to spend the day. This public area on Lake Singletary is a popular summer spot for swimming and sunbathing. Many Sutton children take swim lessons here. The camp is open year round.
The residents of Sutton also have some really great places to shop. The Vaillancourt Folk Art shop is one of these. This Christmas studio features handpainted chalkware and beautiful gifts imported from Europe.
Sutton is not only a peaceful town, but it is also historic. The town was settled in 1716. Seven National Historic sites can be found in Sutton including the Sutton Center Historic District, which houses the town common and town cemetery, both dating back to 1719. A few antique houses and a historic animal pound can also be found here.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are available at Sutton’s Whittier Farms. You can also buy gift boxes, baked goods, seasonal items, beef bundles, and meat packages.
The farm also runs farm shares, tours, and special events.
And speaking of special events, this family-friendly town also hosts its own yearly holiday celebration. The Annual Chain of Lights in Historic Sutton is held on the first Saturday of December. Children’s activities, trolley rides, food, and caroling are a few of the activities that take place on this festive day.
