The Emerald Necklace is one of the most beautiful achievements in urban landscaping anywhere in the world. This gorgeous system of parks circles Boston like a necklace, allowing city dwellers and those in the suburbs to enjoy a bit of greenery without traveling too far from home.
In the fall, the massive trees in these parks melt into gold and scarlet. The foliage in this area is best viewed from mid-October to early November, when the entire "necklace" flares into rich color.
This tour will take you to the most popular and spectacular natural areas, as well as many hidden gems in Boston. You’ll cycle past and through the Boston Common and Public Garden, the Charles River Esplanade, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Rose Kennedy Greenway and the Arnold Arboretum.
In addition, your guide will lead you through lesser-known spots where the foliage show is just as marvelous, but the crowds are a bit thinner.
If you’re going to hop on this tour, you need to be prepared to ride for up to four hours and 15 miles. Even though the tour will likely not take this long, riders must be comfortable covering that distance. There are several gentle hills on the route, but nothing too extreme. This route is a favorite among locals, and the bike tour is probably the best way to see all the lovely sites and fall color in one day.
The Emerald Necklace tour is $75 per person. For that price, you get an individually-fitted bike, helmet, a bottle of water and the expertise of your guide. The tours run from September 15 onward.
