Summer in Massachusetts means beach days, sandy car seats, fresh seafood, and plenty of awesome events. And perhaps no other Bay State tradition so perfectly merges the summer season with tasty food than the clam bake. In fact, the Carver Home Day clam bake is as old-fashioned New England as it gets. Here are the details.
The Carver Old Home Day is a classic New England celebration of summer, community, and above all else, delicious clams. Held every year at the end of July – specifically, the last Saturday of the month – this awesome event is the perfect way to connect with friends and family while indulging in piles of fresh seafood.
Just in case you need a refresher, a clam bake is a traditional method of cooking up shellfish like clams, lobsters, and quahogs in which the critters are steamed over seaweed. The cooking process is powered by piping-hot stones (or cannonballs) that are placed in a fire pit along with the clams and seaweed. The whole thing is covered with tarps or potato sacks soaked with seawater and left to cook for several hours.
At the Carver Old Home Day event, clams are baked in a massive in-ground fire pit that’s manned by cooks and firefighters. Food will be served at 1:30 p.m. at long communal tables under the shady pines. The grub is truly delicious and will definitely be some of the freshest you’ll ever taste. This event has been going strong since 1901, so you know they know how to throw a clam bake.
This particular clam bake is fun for the whole family. In addition to the clam feast, you can expect a horseshoe tournament, a doll carriage and bicycle parade through Shurtleff Park, a craft fair, live music, and a classic car cruise and tractor show.
This summer event also supports the Carver community. In fact, the clam bake helps local Carver High School graduates fund their college expenses through scholarships. This means you can feel extra good about digging into those clams.
Carver Old Home Day will be happening July 27, 2019. To purchase tickets, please call Cheryl at 508-866-9196. You can learn more about the event here. If you love summery adventures in Massachusetts, check out this day trip to the best wine and waterfalls in the state.
