You may think you know all there is to know about Maryland, but were you aware that the Old Line State was the first to do many things? There were also several inventions that started right here, including the infamous Ouija Board. Now, this creepy board game is known all over the world, but it had humble beginnings in Baltimore. Read on for the details…
The original Ouija Board was created in the early 1890s by Baltimorean, Elijah Bond. This is said to be the original design.
The Ouija Board was meant to be a fun parlor game. It wasn't known as a device to contact the dead until spiritualist Pearl Curran popularized it during World War I.
The board has had several design upgrades throughout the years...
...and is known throughout the world as a spirit communicator.
The Ouija Board has become a pop culture staple, being featured in movies, art work, murals...
...and you can even find the world's largest Ouija Board in Salem, Massachusetts.
No matter how popular the simple board game gets, we know that it got its start right here in the Old Line State. In fact, the inventor's grave is here, too.
Head to Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore...
...and be on the lookout for Elijah Jefferson Bond. On one side, this appears to be an ordinary tombstone...
