There's Something Chilling About This Abandoned Hospital In Maryland

Located in Prince Georges County, Maryland, this sprawling hospital has been abandoned for over 30 years. While it was once one of the state’s most important medical institutions, it’s currently deserted and turning to dust in a very spooky way.

Glenn Dale Hospital was a tuberculosis sanatorium built in 1934.

It also served as an isolation hospital, sheltering those with dangerously contagious diseases.

The complex is huge, covering more than 200 acres and including 23 buildings.

The decaying hospital includes art rooms, chapels, morgues, playgrounds and staff housing.

The creepiest part? A vast underground tunnel system runs between the buildings.

These tunnels were mainly used to travel between the children’s and adults’ buildings.

However, there are rumors that some led to rooms where particularly unstable patients were kept.

If those tunnels or rooms exist, they’ve never been found.

Today, overgrown vines and rust blanket the silent hallways and wards.

In 1994, Maryland enacted a law requiring the grounds be turned into a continuing care facility for the elderly if the hospital is ever sold.

In the meantime, preservation groups are campaigning to have the hospital listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Whatever the future has in store for Glenn State Hospital, the memories of former patients and staff will live on for years.
