Maryland is home to quite a few ruins, most of which are only reachable by hiking. That's what makes the following spot so different. There's no hiking required to view these ruins -- they're right in the middle of a suburban neighborhood. Read on for the interesting details...
You'll find Terra Maria ruins at 3160 St Charles Place in Ellicott City.
Although you'd usually find old ruins among forested areas, Terra Maria is surprisingly located in the middle of a neighborhood.
This was once the former St. Charles College. It was built in the 1800s and thrived for decades. Sadly, a fire destroyed most of it in 1911.
Salvageable pieces were transported to Catonsville to be rebuilt. What remains in the original location are now only remnants of the recreation hall.
They may be remnants, but they're still full of rustic beauty. Head here to marvel at the intricate arches and impressive stonework on the ground.
Walk through magical doorways...
...and capture picture-perfect photos.
While admiring this fairy tale-esque place, be respectful. Neighborhood residents work to keep this hidden gem pristine, so leave nothing behind and try to keep a peaceful volume while perusing the perimeter.
Terra Maria ruins can be enjoyed year-round, and hopefully, for years to come.
