If you love Maine you know that we all affectionately refer to her as Vacationland. Some people mistakenly believe that the name comes from summer trips to the coast, but the reality is that Maine is actually fantastic year-round. We might prefer those warmer months, but there's something about autumn that's absolutely perfect here in Maine. It's also one of the best times to visit our only national park. Here's why we think you should make the trip.

1. That welcome sign is great any time of year.

While this doesn't necessarily tie-in to the fall season, there's nothing like making the drive to Acadia and seeing the welcome sign when you come through. And, of course, in the autumn you'll find it surrounded by the many colors of the foliage here and that's something special.

2. The Carriage Roads are just a bit less busy.

That means you can take your time appreciating everything around you. From the leaves to the beauty of the paths, there's a lot to look at and not having a ton of traffic makes a huge difference. Although, you can't expect the place to be empty. A lot of people agree that fall is a great time to visit!

3. You can take a fall foliage photo workshop.

Acadia is a photographer's dream any day of the year, but fall foliage really kicks things up a notch. And Maine photographer J.K. Putnam offers incredible classes. This year it seems they're all private, but they're totally worth it. You can learn more about them here.

5. The decrease in tourists means more wildlife.

If you love seeing Maine's animals you'll love that you're chances of spotting something are way higher in the fall.

6. You might have to learn some patience.

Most of the time that wildlife does what they want, when they want! But, if we were turkeys in the fall we'd probably be making our way across the road to get out of dodge, too! Thanksgiving is just around the corner, after all.

7. There's a small window of less tourists, so grab it now!

The park clears out mid-September and this is always when you'll begin seeing Maine's fall foliage. Get it now before mid-October when changing leaves are at their peak and the place gets busy once again.

8. Hiking is great in slightly cooler temperatures.

Summer might offer green trees and even wild blueberries, but when the weather cools off in the fall hiking can be even more fun. You'll still get sweaty, but the temperatures might make the trail feel a little easier.

9. Bar Harbor is quieter.

As some of the crowds thin out you'll be standing in shorter ice cream lines, waiting less time for a table and even getting better rates at hotels and bed and breakfasts.

10. There's never a bad time to support our National Parks.

America needs National Parks and it's important to support them whenever we can. Get out there, pay that admission and thank a ranger!
