This Massive Maine Woods May Be Home To The Next National Park
Way up in the northern Maine woods is a massive section of untouched land. If you have been a resident for a while then you are familiar with the wilderness area which has little to no civilization. It is so remote that a lot of that area doesn’t even have town names instead there are just lot numbers. This far-off area is the plot of land that is being considered for a new national park in Maine.
The proposal for this new park will be called the Maine Woods National Park.
The picture here shows the supposed area in which it will cover. The size of this untouched land would be bigger than Yosemite and Yellowstone combined. The purpose of this proposal is to protect this area from development and allow future generations to continue using it for recreation and for the preservation of the ecosystem of northern Maine. Although the proposed national park will surround Baxter State Park, that area will be left as-is and not be part of the national park.
The Maine Woods National Park will be very different from our current national park, Acadia.
Whereas Acadia is all about rugged rocky coastlines, mountainous terrain, and seacoast forests, Maine Woods National Park will be wholly different. This vast expanses of the forest will feature mountains, the section of the Appalachian Trail known as the 100-mile Wilderness Trail, and lots of lakes, including Moosehead Lake.
The northern Maine woods is home to many different species like the black bear, the Canadian Lynx, and of course, the iconic moose. Protecting this area would help create security for these animals and allow them to thrive in their natural habitat.
Lots of Mainers have fond memories of visiting Moosehead Lake for either some ice fishing or summer recreation. This national park would make good use of this area and keep it from further development to allow for recreation to continue for years to come.
Our forests have been explored and enjoyed for many generations and having a national park would allow for hiking trails to be developed and maintained to insure many people can get out in the wild and enjoy our Maine wilderness.
This massive underdeveloped and unprotected area is the biggest region of its kind east of the Rockies. Those of us here in Maine know what kind of beauty can be found during the different seasons. Perhaps the best of all is the fall foliage that ignites the forest with colors. This area could one day become our newest national park.
What do you think of a new national park in Maine? We will have to watch as things develop and see what happens but while we wait we can simply enjoy the northern Maine forest as it stands right now. If you love national parks then you can already enjoy our very own Acadia National Park!
