If you are like me, there is nothing quite like a day at the lake. Fishing, boating, swimming, or just sitting back and admiring the beautiful landscapes are just a few of the activities that I enjoy at some of the best bodies of water around the Pine Tree State. With more than 6,000 lakes and ponds scattered around Maine, there are plenty of places to go and spend time on the water, but some of these destinations tend to draw in more of a crowd than others. That’s why a day at China Lake is perfect. It’s quiet, yet large enough for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and more. See for yourself!

China Lake is located in eastern Kennebec County. The towns of China, South China, and East Vassalboro all sit near this beautiful body of water.

It is also just a short drive from Augusta, Belgrade, and several others.
China Lake is known for its irregular shape, but that simply adds to the charm of the destination. It’s not one of the smallest lakes in Maine, nor one of the largest - at just over 3,800 acres, it is just right.

During the warmer months of the year, China Lake is a haven for water enthusiasts as there is plenty to see and do for the entire family.

It’s a wonderful destination for fishing and you may be lucky enough to catch a variety of fish, including trout, bass, perch, shiners, sticklebacks, and more. There are also two public boat docks to make accessing the water convenient and easy.

If you don’t want to try your hand at fishing, bring a kayak or canoe and just float around the lake. The larger size of this lake makes it perfect for a full day adventure.

You can also spend some time at one of the public beaches that surround the lake. Bring a picnic and enjoy a little bit of sunshine. Then stay for the sunsets — they are inspiring.
China Lake isn’t just for summer excitement either. During the winter, the area transforms into a wonderland with snowshoeing and snowmobiling opportunities galore.

And even if you simply want a getaway, China Lake is an ideal destination. The many local vacation rentals and quiet campgrounds make this a place where you can relax, unwind, and de-stress.
