Camping in Maine is one of the state’s most wonderful past times. There’s nothing like making a fire, then cozying up in a tent to wake up and have some outdoor fun. But, these days there are more ways to enjoy overnighting outside. For those who have never quite warmed to the idea of sleeping on the ground, we recommend glamping!
And, when it comes to great glamping spots to try, the eco-friendly yurts at Maine Forest Yurts in Durham are some of the best.
A yurt is a round, moveable tent that was once used by nomadic people in Central Asia.
But, these particular yurts were not constructed by people thousands of years ago. These were created by Bob Crowley, the 17th (and oldest!) winner of the reality show, "Survivor."

The prize, $1 million, was partially used to pay off bills and taxes.
But in 2013, with some remaining winnings, Bob and his wife built a glamping retreat allowing guests to soak up the rural Maine nature, without having to truly rough it.

The yurts sit in the remote Maine woods on some of the 100 acres that Rob and his wife acquired over the course of the last 30 years.
As if providing a respite from the busier parts of life isn’t helpful enough, Maine Forest Yurts offers free stays for deserving groups, such as those from local schools, active military and veterans, as well as non-profit groups.
These stays are made possible by their annual fundraising project, "Durham Warriors Project." The program invites people to compete in challenges that are reminiscent of Crowley’s show, "Survivor."
