The Ferry Ride To Island Lobster Company In Maine Almost As Fantastic As The Seafood
It’s not every day that we find a restaurant requiring extra work to visit that we’re willing to see. In Maine, it’s not uncommon for a friend to share a story about a place they visited that’s completely inconvenient, but has delicious food. We love the idea of those spots, but we’re not quick to jump in the car to check them out. But this place is different! It’s located on an island in Casco Bay and visiting requires a short boat ride that we love taking!
Island Lobster Company is located on Peaks Island, the beauty that sits in Casco Bay about 10 minutes from Portland. The best way to get there is by the Casco Bay Ferry service and while it might not be as easy as driving, the ride over is worth having to stick to their schedule.
Note that this large mail lobster was returned to the sea to continue to breed
If you're not relaxed enough after the ferry right across Casco Bay, considerig grabbing a drink and a seat outside to let the salty ocean air ease your mind.
And for something a little more special, head downstairs to their bar. The Skegg menu has some amazing Maine food, including a basket of island oysters, and east meets west lobster roll and a truffle lobster roll.
We love how casual this spot is. The food feels upscale, but the people surrounding you will be friendly as can be! So, take that ferry and enjoy an afternoon doing something new. But be sure to do it quickly! They'll be closed for the season by October.
Island Lobster Company is open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the season which runs from the spring through the fall. You can learn more about the restaurant and see a menu by visiting their website. You can also follow them on Facebook to keep up-to-date on weather closures and seasonally schedule changes. The Casco Bay ferry schedule can be found here. Rides from Portland to Peaks Island are $7.70 for adults and $3.85 for adults 65+ and kids 5 to 15 years old.
Michelle has lived in many places, but counts Maine as one of the best. In addition to the smell of ocean water in the air on rainy days in Portland, she loves puppies, photography, funny people, the Maine Red Claws, traveling, fresh tomatoes, Cambodia and filling out forms.
