If you ask us, we should all be considered famous people from Maine just for living here. After all, we get through some rough winters, we have a funny way of talking, and we know how to look fashionable in any season. Alas, only some of us are actually discovered to be the celebrities in Maine that we are. Here's a list of some of the most notable people who lived in, or once lived in Maine. From movie stars to Civil War generals, we're pretty much the Hollywood of the east!
1. Anna Kendrick (Portland)
You could say this actress was pitch perfect during her time at Deering High School! She was born and raised in Portland. She first gained fame for her roles in the "Twilight" film series, and has become a mega-star since even receiving Academy Award nominations.
2. General Joshua Chamberlain (Brewer)
This Civil War general was born in Brewer and his final resting place is in Brunswick. He didn't come from a military background, but rather was a professor at Bowdoin. After the war, he served as the Governor of Maine and also the President of Bowdoin College. He was portrayed by Jeff Daniels in the film "Gettysburg."
3. Patrick Dempsey (Lewiston)
"McDreamy" was turning heads in Lewiston way before he was on television in his Grey's Anatomy scrubs! He attended high school in Maine before his family moved to Houston. Fun fact: he was an avid juggler when young, and finished second in the International Jugglers' Association Youth Championship.
4. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (Portland)
The famous poet's home can still be toured in downtown Portland near Monument Square. He was one of the greatest poets of his era and also noteworthy as the first American to translate Dante's "Divine Comedy." He was born in Portland, though at that time it was a district of Massachusetts.
5. Judd Nelson (Portland)
Judd Nelson is best-known for his roles in the 1980s hits "The Breakfast Club" and "St. Elmo's Fire." He honed his skills while attending Waynflete School in Portland, the city of his birth. His mother was a one-time member of the Maine House of Representatives.
6. Liv Tyler (attended school in Portland)
While she was not born in Maine, Liv did spend a bit of time in the state before heading to New York City to pursue her acting career. She attended Waynflete School in Portland. She actually didn't realize she was the daughter of Aerosmith's Steven Tyler until 1991! Prior to that, her mother told her she was fathered by Todd Rundgren (also a famous musician).
7. Jon Fishman (lives in Lincolnville)
Did you know the drummer for iconic jam band Phish owns a general store right here in Lincolnville? He and his family live here, though he was born in Philadelphia. At least he knew where to settle down!
8. David E. Kelley (Waterville)
The producer of "Ally McBeal" and "Boston Legal" spent his childhood in Waterville, his birthplace. He met Michelle Pfeiffer on a blind date and they ended up married with two children.
9. Seth Wescott (lives in Carrabassett Valley)
A two-time Olympic Gold Medalist in in snowboarding, Seth Wescott got his start in the sport at Carrabassett Valley Academy in Maine. He now co-owns The Rack, a restaurant near Sugarloaf.
10. Don McLean (has a home in Camden)
This "American Pie" superstar lived full-time in Camden for a while. Guess this is where he drank his whiskey and rye. The Don McLean Foundation is an anti-poverty charity that is based at his home in Maine.
