Maine’s Five Fifty-Five Restaurant Is Said To Have The Best Mac And Cheese In The World
Maine is big on vibes. And one of the vibes we love best is the cozy feeling being in Maine. Whether it’s winter or spring, fall or summer there’s a certain feeling we have when it’s rainy or chilly. That’s usually when we go in search of comfort food. While all food provides warmth and some level of comfort (it keeps us alive, after all!) mac and cheese is next level. And this mac and cheese is something unexplainable. And, of course, it’s only here in Maine!
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life. While we continue to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, please take proper precautions or add them to your bucket list to see at a later date. If you know of a local business that could use some extra support during these times, please nominate them here: onlyinyourstate.com/nominate
You'll find Five Fifty-Five in the same building that once housed the Machigonne Fire House in Portland back in the early 1900s. Today, its corner location makes it impossible to miss. Which is a good thing because there's a very important dish inside!
Look at that lobster! But, if seafood isn't your thing they also offer a version without it. Either one is delicious and will have you snapping photos of your food to send to friends.
While you may not be able to enjoy dinner here every night, this is a wonderful destination for special occasions. And, yes, a Thursday is totally a "special occasion!"
Five Fifty-Five is open every day from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. You can learn more about them and see the incredible full menu here or check them out on Facebook. If you have more questions, give them a call on 207-761-0555.
If you’ve got a craving for mac and cheese now you’ll want to check out this unassuming restaurant that serves a great mac and cheese!

Michelle has lived in many places, but counts Maine as one of the best. In addition to the smell of ocean water in the air on rainy days in Portland, she loves puppies, photography, funny people, the Maine Red Claws, traveling, fresh tomatoes, Cambodia and filling out forms.
