Coastal towns are what we usually think of when we think of Maine, alongside blueberries, pine trees, and camping. From Ogunquit to Bar Harbor, Maine is full of scenic coastal towns with so much to do. But there is one less-talked-about mid-coast town that has a lot to offer to visitors and residents alike.
Damariscotta, Maine is a coastal town in Lincoln County. The population of the town is approximately 1,314 people year-round.
In the summer, the population rises due to summer residents and tourists. The town of Newcastle, Maine is often called Damariscotta's twin village because it's also a wonderful destination and they're linked by the Main Street Bridge over the Damariscotta River.
Damariscotta is home to the rocky coastal shores that Maine is known for.
These shores lay aside the Damariscotta River and Damariscotta Harbor that flows into the ocean. It's a mix of both salt and fresh water.
Damariscotta Lake flows into the Damariscotta River and is made up of fresh water.
The Damariscotta Lake is a great family destination that comes with a sandy beach and a lot less boat traffic than saltwater areas in Damariscotta and other coastal Maine towns.
Damariscotta also offers a quaint coastal downtown that attracts many shoppers and diners.
Some of the most popular restaurants and shops in Damariscotta include Harbor Yarns, The Kingfisher and The Queen, Gifts at 136, Schooner Landing, and River House.
Although downtown Damariscotta can get quite busy, especially in the summer months, there is a lot of peace to be found in this town too.
During the early mornings, a beautiful sunrise can be seen over both the Damariscotta River and Damariscotta Lake. Trails varying in difficulty along both of these bodies of water can be used for a meditative walk in the picturesque and calm natural scenery.
Other beautiful views can be seen on these trails including views of fields and wildflowers.
If you're lucky, you may even see animals that inhabit the area, such as the American bald eagle, harbor seals, horseshoe crabs, and double-crested cormorants.
If you're looking for a calm and adventurous trip all in one, then Damariscotta, Maine is the ideal destination. Be sure to check out Damariscotta Lake State Park and if you want to explore Damariscotta River more, then this riverboat cruise can definitely help!
