Maine is full of scenic views and tucked-away beauties. Some are right outside our front door. In fact, many are right outside our front door when you consider just how special this state is. You really don’t need to go far to be reminded of how lucky we are to be in Vacationland. BUT! There are some extra-special attractions that are worth traveling for. This little covered bridge might not take up much real estate, but it’s one of the most special little treasure we have and it’s worth visiting on a day-trip.
You might know Artist's Bridge in Newry by its more official name, the Sunday River Bridge. But, one look at this covered bridge and you'll be able to imagine why it earned its nickname.
The 100-foot long, 20-foot wide structure spanning the Sunday River was built in 1872 to replace the original which was washed away by a storm in 1811.
It's not uncommon to find people painting, sketching, watercoloring or photographing this super-scenic bridge. And while many people believe this is how it got its nickname, it's actually one specific artist that led to the creation of this moniker.
The artist that is believed to be the reason for the name is John Enneking, and early American impressionists. He was a Union soldier in the Civil War held as a POW. After his release he moved to Boston where he began honing his painting craft eventually becoming an expert in portraying New England landscapes.
And this one was a clear favorite of his. He was often found sitting just down the river capturing it in plein air. He was seen here so often that people began referring to it as the "artist's bridge."
While the bridge is beautiful, the views from the bridge are also incredible. You'll be able to take in the river as well as the forested land surrounding it.
Catch it at different times of year to see it in lots of different ways. We love it in autumn, but covered in snow and surrounded by greenery is also pretty special.
Artist’s Bridge, officially called Sunday River Bridge, can be visited any time of year. You’ll find it in the western part of Newry next to where the Sunday River flows by Sunday River Road. It’s just northeast of the Sunday River Ski Resort.
