You know how much we love a good hike here in Maine and finding them throughout the state is easy. There are so many to choose from that the hardest part is really just narrowing down the options. Or, you can do what we do which is create a long-running list of all the spots we want to check out as soon as we can! We recommend you put this state park at the top of the list. It's beautiful, a bit lesser-known, and offers lots of fun.
Elizabeth Vaughan gifted the woods of her home to the state of Maine in 1949 asking that it be kept wild. Her only stipulation has been heeded and today the area is beautiful.
Vaughan Woods State Park offers 160 acres of land filled with mixed-growth forests made up of hundred-year-old trees.
Throughout the park, you'll also find wildflowers and birds.
One of the most beautiful features is the Salmon Falls River, which the park is adjacent to. Beautiful any time of year, this river adds to the calming atmosphere.
There are multiple trails meandering through the state park.
They vary in length from the 0.7-mile Bridle Path Trail to the longer 2-mile Vaughan Woods Memorial Trail.
No matter which one you choose, you'll enjoy the views and want to come back to try them all.
Vaughan Woods State Park is open from 9 a.m. to sunset. You can learn more about the trails by checking out Maine Trail Finder. Entry is $4 for non-residents and $3 for residents. Senior non-residents are $1. You can get more details and specifics by visiting the official site here.
While you're out exploring remember that hopping in the car to see other parts of the state is always a good idea. In fact, fall is the perfect time to visit this historic mountain town in Maine!
