Think you know all there is to know about Louisiana? I’ve lived in the Pelican State for over three decades and I’m still finding out new facts about Louisiana that make me proud to call this place home. Most Louisianians know about the lengthy list of foods that were invented here, how many parishes we have, and the eternal debate on whether the Pontchartrain Bridge is the longest in the world (it’s not)…but did you know these unique trivia facts below?
1. Louisiana is home to some of the oldest cypress trees in the country.
The castle tree in northern Louisiana is just one of them. It's believed to be anywhere from 800-1,000 years old and you can kayak to it from Chemin-A-Haut State Park.
2. New Orleans opened the first licensed pharmacy in the United States.
Louis Dufilho Jr. became the first licensed pharmacist in 1816 and opened up his own shop in 1823 in New Orleans. You can visit the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum today!

4. The Louisiana State Arboretum is the oldest state-supported arboretum in the country.
It was established in 1961 and began as a 301-acre preserve. Today, it’s over 600 acres and is part of Chicot State Park.
5. Covington, Louisiana is home to the largest statue of Ronald Reagan on the planet.
You can find it at the Covington Trailhead of the Tammany Trace.
6. Rayne, Louisiana is home to a cemetery that faces the wrong direction.
St. Joseph Cemetery is the only cemetery in the United States that faces North-South instead of East-West.
7. The McNeill Pumping Station in Shreveport is the last known steam-powered municipal water treatment in the country.
It was in operation from 1887-1980 and is part of the Shreveport Water Works Museum.
