Whether you’re looking for a quiet solo escape or if you have the whole family along for the ride, Barataria Preserve is a great place to spend the day. The preserve’s 26,000 acres of bayous, swamps, marshes, and forests are some of the most stunning in the area, and there are plenty of trails to explore. There’s one particular trail that will take you on quite the scenic journey, and you should add it to your bucket list. Let’s check it out:

There are several trails to explore, and since they are all less than 3 miles in length, you can mix and match to fit your schedule.
For a short and sweet hike that ends in a scenic payoff, start your journey at the Palmetto Trail.

From there, the trail will blend into the Bayou Coquille Trail. Combined, you're looking at roughly two miles out-and back.
Informative signs are peppered along the trails, so you may learn a thing or two along the way.

It's not that common, but the gators have been known to sunbathe ON the trails. If you're visiting during the summer when the alligators are more prevalent, you'll want to keep an eye out.
But the views at the end of the trail are worth the effort.
