Every Christmas Eve, something magical happens in St. James Parish. More than 100 bonfires are lit along the levee, a tradition that’s over a century old. It’s certainly worth your while to attend this one of a kind event that you won’t find anywhere else.

Originally, the bonfires were meant to light the way for the Papa Noel, the Cajun Santa. The bonfires would light the way and tell Santa where to go as he flew across southern Louisiana. They would also be used to lead the way to Midnight Mass at local Catholic Churches in the area.

We’d recommend getting there before 6 p.m. so you can walk the levee and see the bonfires, take pictures, and enjoy the views.
