If you lived anywhere near New Orleans prior to Hurricane Katrina, chances are you visited this popular amusement park before it closed down. It’s more than a decade later and the park still sits abandoned, slowly being reclaimed by nature. There’s something hauntingly beautiful about these pictures, so let’s take a look at the rise and unfortunate fall of this popular amusement park in New Orleans.

Located in New Orleans, Six Flags was a 140-acre amusement park that has been abandoned since Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005.

The park originally opened in 2000 under the name Jazz Land.
Unfortunately, they weren’t very profitable and put the park up for sale in 2001. Six Flags purchased it the following year.

After purchasing the park, Six Flags made some renovations and renamed it "Six Flags New Orleans" in 2003.
They added some new rides and more seating areas. They had plans to include a water park, however Mother Nature had other plans.

The last day the park was open was August 21, 2005.
When Hurricane Katrina struck, the park was badly flooded.

The park took on upwards of 7 feet of water for more than a month.

It was one of the least successful Six Flags parks in the country before the storm.
Today, the park sits abandoned after all these years, giving off quite the eerie vibe.

Other amusement park companies have looked into purchasing the property to give new life to the area, but sadly all of these deals have fallen through.
There have been talks of turning the abandoned space into a public park, an outlet mall, and even a power plant at one point.

Some of the movies that have been filmed there include Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Jurassic World, and Deepwater Horizon.
The area is completely off limits to the public.

The area is under 24 hours surveillance and trespassers will be prosecuted, so please do not go exploring!
