Kentucky has a vast amount of gorgeous scenic areas, charming small towns, and delicious eateries that will make every visit to this great state a complete joy. A weekend getaway to explore the beauty, history, and cuisine of an unfamiliar place can make long-lasting memories that you’ll treasure for decades. Take a trip to the Dr. Thomas Walker State Historic Site to soak in scenic beauty and local history and then have a scrumptious meal at Folktale Coffee & Bakehouse where small-town charm meets modern meals. Let’s start this small-town adventure in Kentucky!
The first stop on our adventure is the Dr. Thomas Walker State Historic Site where you can learn about some of Kentucky’s history and have lots of fun with the family.
This park has a replica of the very first house ever built in Kentucky! It stands on the same land where the original was built in the 1700s by Thomas Walker, who led the first expedition through the Cumberland Gap. Free tours of the house are available.
There are playgrounds dotted throughout the site, picnic areas with grills, and even a miniature golf course where the family can putt about. It’s next to a gift shop where you can buy Kentucky souvenirs.
Best of all, there are two primitive camping sites here and the forest that is nestled up against this park contains hiking trails that will lead you to stunning sights like this.
After your explorations, you’ve probably worked up an appetite. A short 30-minute drive will take you to the quaint town of Corbin where you’ll find Folktale Coffee & Bakehouse.
The menu is absolutely fantastic and quite varied. These Swedish pancakes with berry compote and cream cheese filling and lingonberry sauce, for example, are absolutely to die for!
There are tons of delicious sandwich options like this one made of house-made sourdough toast with smoked salmon, capers, whipped cream cheese, pickled red onions, and lettuce. Yum!
