In Kentucky, we’re proud of the natural beauty that can be found all over the state. It’s also quite nice to discover plant species we’re not familiar with, and the best place to do that is at a Kentucky arboretum. Most big cities have one, but thankfully there are some pretty impressive small-town arboretums in Kentucky as well! Let’s explore Baker Arboretum in Bowling Green, Kentucky!

The Baker Arboretum was founded by the Jerry E. Baker Foundation in 1992 and it spans 115 acres, overlooking the Western Kentucky University campus. It’s open year-round and was built with the help of landscape architect Mitchell Leichhardt.

There are 600 total species of plants with over 1500 varieties, including many native Kentucky plants, 17 of them endangered.

You’ll find a great variety of trees, including 88 species of conifers, 21 of which are on the Red List of Threatened Species and there are 106 types of Asian maples, many of them Japanese.

It’s a wonderful place for a family outing and it is as educational as it is gorgeous. The kids will be able to learn about and appreciate the variety and beauty of nature and it’ll be a lovely break from the phones and get to see the lushness of life first-hand.

You can also see man-made beauty at the Downing Museum which is at the same site and do two trips in one! The Baker Arboretum is closed on Sunday and Monday. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April through October and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. November through March. Suggested donation is $10.
