I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
The land in Kentucky is mostly made up of nourished soil, fantastic to grow a garden on. Because of that there are some incredible gardens spread across the state. The land is the reason the trees grow so densely in our forests, surrounded by flourishing plant life. Some gardens are accessible and shared with visitors and residents alike.
Here are 10 of the most beautiful gardens in the Bluegrass State:
If you need to check the time in Frankfort, take a look at the capitol lawn. Back in 1961, this floral clock containing over 10,000 flowers on the face was constructed. It's a favorite tourist attraction, but most locals can now tell time via petunia.
This 6 acre private garden is located in Union, across from the state park. There are fragrant herb gardens, 7 different amazing water gardens, and a variety of themed gardens, such as the Gnomes.
Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest is a gorgeous forest that has over 15 acres of fragrant and colorful gardens, including Dogwood trees, perennial sculptures, and a peaceful Lily pond. Bernheim is located off Highway 245 in Clermont, near I65 exit 112.
The Garden Club of Kentucky makes their home at 616 Pleasant Street in Paris Kentucky on a 4 acre arboretum. This beautiful multi garden area holds a flowing fish garden, over 70 varieties of trees, a rose garden, and more.
This garden on Main Street and Giddings Drive in Georgetown is only ½ acre, but the colors and fragrance are amazing. This vibrant collage of nature includes a butterfly garden and a hummingbird garden, along with several others.
This well preserved mansion and lands are covered in hybrid peonies, roses, boxed hedges, and other lovely plants favored by the Clays. Those in the Lexington who want to visit will find the gardens at 120 Sycamore Road.
Visitors to 218 Wilkinson Road in Frankfort will find the largest "formal" box garden in Kentucky. It features over 3 acres of boxed gardens, bordered by a colorful display of annuals and perennials.
This beautifully preserved 1790 Georgian mansion in Louisville features not only an incredible home, but also several gardens. The cutting garden is inspirational and vivid. The quadrant and herb gardens are also unforgettable.
This pioneer style apothecary sits at 125 S 2nd Street in Danville. It may not be covered in acres of rose gardens, but it does have a unique medicinal herb garden. These fragrant herbs once healed the people of the Bluegrass, long before antibiotics became so easily accessible.
This famed Bardstown landmark at 501 E Stephen Foster Avenue hosts an 1818 mansion and several acres of well maintained formal flower gardens. The entire area gives one a vision of southern belles walking amidst rows of roses and wild flowers.
Each one of these amazing gardens will give visitors an experience they won’t soon forget. There is something about being surrounded by pleasant scents and natural vivid colors that soothes the souls of most people.
