Because really, there are few places in Frankfort that aren't historically significant, so we recommend taking your time as you wander through town! But in terms of "the best of the best," the following are five must-see historic landmarks that you will definitely want to visit in lovely Frankfort, Kentucky.
The capitol of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Frankfort is a beautiful river town with a celebrated history.
All throughout town, you'll find iconic sites and buildings that harken back to the early days of the Bluegrass.
Kentucky's favorite founding father is honored at the Daniel Boone Burial Site, located at 215 E Main Street. Come and pay your respects to this legendary explorer; it will set the tone for a day of historic highs in this historic Kentucky town.
A slight detour that's worth taking is the utterly charming Switzer Covered Bridge. Built by George Hockersmith in 1855, this beguiling bridge is 126 feet long and 11 feet wide, and a shining example of the Howe truss design. Renovated in 1998, this bridge is listed on the National Historic Register and is open from dawn to dusk.
Back in town, there are numerous historic points of interest to explore in Frankfort.
The Old Governor's Mansion was built in 1797 and served as the residence of 33 Kentucky governors, until a new home was built in 1914. It's a beautiful, Federalist-style building that's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Tours of this historic home are available by appointment, and definitely worth checking out if you're a Bluegrass history buff!
Liberty Hall Historic Site is another must-visit in Frankfort. This lovely Federalist home harkens back to the turn of the 19th century. It was built by American statesman John Brown, and designated in 1971 as a U.S. National Historic Landmark for its association with Brown and its quintessential Federalist-style architecture.

And of course, it's not a visit to Frankfort without paying homage to the Old State Capitol Building.
This National Historic Landmark served as Kentucky’s capitol from 1830 to 1910, and its dramatic history and gothic architecture have long invited talk of otherworldly activity. Today, guests can take a nighttime tour of Kentucky’s Old Capitol Building, and see if the rumors are true!
