Dogs aren't just man's best friend; they're also pawsome politicians, too. If you think politics is a bunch of ruff stuff and that politicians have all bark and no bite, you'll be in good company in Rabbit Hash, Kentucky. Because the mayor of this tiny town is Wilbur, an adorable little French Bulldog that's the fifth in a line of celebrated canines to hold this esteemed position. How did Rabbit Hash become known as the Kentucky town with a dog mayor? Well, it's a doggone good story...
Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, is a tiny little town with a very, very proud history and identity.
The town's eponymous general store is the heart and soul of the community. But the town's pride and joy? That's easy...
...it's Wilbur! Wilbur is the dog mayor of Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, and he's fifth in a line of celebrated mayoral mutts.
Wilbur was elected in 2020, running against the incumbent, a pit bull named Brynn who'd held the office for four proud years.
Before Brynn, the mayor was Lucy Lou, a spirited and beloved border collie who broke the glass ceiling of the old Rabbit Rash General Store, becoming the town's first female mutt mayor.
Lucy passed away in 2018, and remains much beloved.
We bet you're wondering how Rabbit Hash, a town of just 233 residents in Kentucky, began electing pups into mayoral office.
Well, in the late 1990s, Don Claire, a tireless champion of the community, suggested that it would be a great idea to elect some type of animal -- not necessarily a canine -- as mayor of the tiny town, as a fundraising event for the historical society. And he was right.
Since 1998, the election has been the biggest fundraiser for the Rabbit Hash Historical Society, the nonprofit that ensures the preservation and upkeep of the historic town.
But back to Wilbur. This little guy won his seat fair and square, with 7,000 votes coming in at the last minute. Talk about a dog having his day!
Even though he's still a puppy, Wilbur is quite the distinguished gentleman.
He's never too busy to pose for photo ops with the locals...
...or hobnob with Rabbit Hash's canine community. Here he is with Lady Stone, former ambassador of Rabbit Hash.
Lady was appointed Ambassador for Rabbit Hash after the Mayoral election in 2016. She was a staunch supporter of the town online and in person, fulfilling her governmental duties in a dedicated and joyous manner.
She passed away in 2021, and is dearly missed.
Rabbit Hash's tradition of electing dog mayors is so uniquely and delightfully Kentucky, and we're here for it.
And, if you're wondering, yes, Wilbur's favorite drink is obviously Ale-8-One!
Did you know about this little Kentucky town with a dog mayor? Have you met the prestigious pooch that currently holds the position? This is a fur-bulous tradition that we really think more states ought to adopt.
