There’s A Kansas Town That’s Full Of Painted Birdhouses Every Spring
Have you ever come upon a small Kansas town and noticed a collection of painted objects that makes them unique? Maybe the Marysville black squirrels or the Lindsborg Dala herd have appeared in past travels, but there’s another one that should be on your travel list this year. Out in Great Bend, these beautifully painted birdhouses are just begging for a look and a photo, enchanting with all sorts of different colors.
Welcome to Great Bend, a town out in central Kansas and directly west of McPherson. Here, a colorful collection is just waiting for you to come by and take a look.
Walking down the street, it's not odd to see 3-5 foot tall birdhouses standing in front of small businesses. They're decorated with all sorts of shapes, colors, and mediums, each one unique and beautiful in its own way.
From beauty to raising awareness about important issues, these birdhouses are the work of community members of all kinds. It's a great tour to take if you're in town!
These birdhouses were put here as a way to bring tourism in and connect Great Bend to the Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway. These beautiful birds definitely prefer the wetlands to these birdhouses, but it's a great way to bring the two together and bring color to the sidewalks.
Some of the birdhouses change as they're repainted, and others may only pop out their heads during certain times of the year. Count the houses or pick out your favorites and enjoy the town!
