Few People Realize the Largest Town Square in the Country Is Right Here in Kansas

Iola, Kansas, boasts the largest downtown courthouse square in the U.S., surrounded by colorful historic buildings and local businesses.

Most roadside attractions in Kansas are just kind of… there. A giant sculpture, a quirky billboard in the middle of a field—something to pull off the highway and snap a photo. Iola is different. It isn’t flashy or loud, but it’s historic, colorful, and has a charm that’s hard to find.

A Downtown Square Like No Other

Even if you’ve driven through southeast Kansas before, you might have missed what makes this town of about 5,300 so unique. Right in the center sits a claim to fame you wouldn’t expect: Iola’s town square is said to be the largest in the U.S. that hasn’t been cut through by streets. It’s a solid block of history that’s remained the heart of the town since 1859.

Exploring the Heart of Iola

Walking around the square, you’re surrounded by brightly painted buildings filled with local shops and cafes. Plaques scattered around tell stories from the early days—like back when trolleys carried people around town in the 1920s. For a true taste of local history, you can even hop on the Fearless Fred Trolley Tour (just call 620-365-5252 to check schedules). Even without a formal tour, it’s a great place to park the car and wander.

A Few Spots Worth Checking Out:

  • Food & Shopping: Grab a coffee at Wild Bloom, enjoy a meal at Sharky’s or King’s Sandwich Shop, or hunt for antiques and unique finds at The Market Place on the square.
  • The History: If you love local lore, the Allen County Historical Society Museum has fascinating old photos and artifacts. For something a bit spookier, the Old Allen County Jail (built in 1869) still has its original cells.
  • The Vibe: On weekends, the Farmers’ Market brings live music, crafts, and community energy to the square. The Allen County Fair, held nearby, is about as classic a Kansas summer event as you’ll find.
  • The Outdoors: Riverside Park sits right on the Neosho River—a perfect spot to stretch your legs. The Prairie Spirit Trail runs through Iola too, offering 50 miles of old rail trail for walking, biking, or spotting wildlife.

A Hidden Gem Worth Visiting

Iola surprises you in the best way. Tucked east of El Dorado and south of Lawrence, it turns a simple road trip into a small-town discovery. It’s relaxed, inviting, and just the kind of place you’ll want to stick around a little longer than planned.
