Did you live during a time when electricity wasn't even something common in many homes? Or, are you young enough that you've never lived in a world without electricity everywhere? This model 1950s All Electric House is a look into a time period where they thought this would be the future. Imagine what some of those designers think about what we have today!
Welcome to the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, a spot in Overland Park that contains a museum, KidScape, and our favorite part - a model 1950s All-Electric Home.
This model home details everything the classic nuclear family would want, decorated to match the times but with a modern flair.
It's a blast from the past for sure, especially when you see the nursery decorated just so, with toys we haven't seen for ages. There's just something that feels like home when you see a stuffed animal with the character printed on instead of shaped.
To think that they thought this was the coolest homes could be is a sort of reality check. They couldn't have known just how far we could come.
It was built in 1953 by a local electric company, it was made to be the standard of living for modern American families. However, not all who wanted this life had the ability to have a cozy life in the suburbs.
Now, the display is an integral exhibit in the museum that helps everyone better understand race and class in America during the time.
Other than special circumstances and holidays, the center is usually open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.
For more information about the house and the center, check out their official website, and for updates on special closings or events, keep an eye on their Facebook page.
