One of the best small-town restaurants in Kansas is in the tiny town of Altoona, which has a population of around 350. You'd be forgiven for thinking that there's likely not anything that delicious in a place so small. However, at least in this case, you'd definitely be wrong! Our state is home to Prairie Nut Hut in Altoona, a delicious spot that serves up incredible meals and doesn't take itself too seriously. One of the most popular menu items here has quite the cult following: mountain oysters.
This place serves up delicious food with a side of humor, as you can tell from the sign.
Prairie Nut Hut is an unassuming spot that isn't particularly eye-catching. It was opened up in the 1940s as a simple tavern, though mountain oysters wouldn't appear on the menu until a couple of decades later.
This place has an extremely casual vibe. Only about 50 people can be seated inside, and the floors are littered with peanut shells.
As you can see from this older photo, the walls used to be lined with photos of patrons from over the years.
The patio area is also quite cozy. There's a stage for live music from local acts.
Not familiar with mountain oysters? They're also known as Rocky mountain oysters and are fried bull testicles that are removed when an animal is neutered.
For those of you not brave enough to try the house specialty, don't worry, there are plenty of burgers, sandwiches, and other sides available as well.
This small-town restaurant in Kansas has such a charming, no-frills feel with a dash of humor thrown into the mix. It's no wonder that it's got such a cult following!
