Homestead, Iowa is a bit of an odd town – it’s the only one of the Amana Colonies without “Amana” in its name. Way back in the early 19th century, the Amana community bought Homestead to use as a connection to the railway. In 1875, a 500lb meteorite struck the town – one of only seven to fall in Iowa’s recorded history. Another community claim to fame is that actor Ashton Kutcher considers Homestead his home town. The biggest reason to visit Homestead, though, is to use it as a base camp for exploring the historic and charming Amana Colonies. While you’re in town, you’ll want to stay at Zuber’s Homestead Hotel.
The first Homestead Hotel was built in 1862, and over the years it was rebuilt from fire, renovated, restored, and even changed hands several times. Now, it's owned by Iowans Brian and Bonnie James.
The Major Leaguer is a room that was inspired by Bill Zuber, the innkeeper and major league ballplayer that took over the hotel in 1949. Other themed rooms in the hotel include the Trumpeter Swan, the Glimpse of Amana, and the Vinter - which recognizes the region's fantastic winemakers.
When you stay at the Homestead Hotel, you'll be truly spoiled by the amenities and hospitality.
Plan a visit to the Amana Colonies, where you'll get to experience old fashioned life, and make the Homestead Hotel your home away from home while you explore.
