Hiking is an amazing way to spend the summer, and Iowa is full of hiking trails that are perfect for all ages and all skill levels. These include boardwalk trails, city park hikes, and trails on campgrounds. The Paint Creek Unit Loop Trail is not one of those hikes. Located in Yellow River State Forest, a massive natural area in Iowa’s Driftless Area, near Waterville, this 13.5-mile loop trail is considered one of Iowa’s most challenging hikes. The trails are only lightly developed, with rugged terrain and few signs of civilization along the way. It also comes with some incredible views and is one of the most peaceful spots in all of Iowa, so it may not be for everyone – but it may just be the perfect adventure for an experienced hiker looking to see unspoiled Hawkeye State beauty. We were blown away by some of the views on this trail!
