As summer turns to fall, it’s the perfect time for exploring the great outdoors. The weather is getting cooler, the leaves are changing colors, and it just feels right to spend it in nature. Of course, for me nothing goes better with a hike than a visit to a winery to taste nature’s bounty. Iowa is quickly developing its own Napa Valley, and I was surprised to find out that one of the best wineries in Iowa is actually located on the outskirts of Dubuque! Barrelhead Winery is a small craft winery with a tasting room, and it’s also near an underrated county park. Swiss Valley Park in nearby Peosta is home to a charming nature center as well as what might be the best Iowa hike near a winery – the Swiss Valley Nature Preserve Loop, a 2.1-mile loop trail with amazing views. It all comes together into one of the best day trips possible in eastern Iowa.
