Meredith Willson is known as Mason City, Iowa's "favorite son." Willson was a composer and musician best known for his Broadway shows, including The Music Man. Even the most dedicated Broadway fans may not realize that the fictional River City is based on the very real Mason City, Iowa, and you can travel back in time when you visit The Music Man Square.
Willson's most famous play, The Music Man, was based on his life growing up in small town Iowa.
Today, visitors to Mason City can see the Music Man Square. This museum is a replica of the town Willson created - River City!
When you visit the Square, you'll also be able to visit the restored 1895 home where Meredith Willson’s was born and raised.
The Music Man tells the tale of a spinster who visits River City, Iowa, hoping to swindle Iowans out of their money by convincing them they needed to start a boys' marching band.
The Broadway Show was such a success that it was turned into a film, starring some of the original cast. Robert Preston, Pert Kelton, and The Buffalo Bills all made the leap from Broadway to Hollywood.
Millions of people from all over the world have sung the songs Willson wrote about River City, all the while not knowing it was based on a real Iowa town.
Along with replica storefronts from the play and film, you'll find a museum dedicated to Willson and his accomplishments.
You can even see the actual piano he used to compose such hits as "76 Trombones" and "Gary, Indiana."
