There’s something special about a great hike that lets you slip away from the stress of everyday life and embrace nature. Iowa has so many of them that it’s often hard to choose which state park or nature preserve to explore – unless, of course, you’re as busy as we are, and a longer trip isn’t in the cards! The good news is, Iowa’s county parks and urban parks have some amazing hiking trails too, so odds are that, no matter where you are, you’ll be able to find a little slice of heaven to spend the afternoon exploring. In fact, the best urban hiking path in Iowa might be right here within the city limits of Des Moines. Near the Windsor Heights Area, Greenwood-Ashworth Park is a fantastic urban retreat, and it boasts a 2.7-mile trail connecting the two areas. The Ashworth Park to Greenwood Park Singletrack can be completed in around an hour, and we think it’s an adventure not to be missed.

That's not to say this isn't a challenging hike, though - in fact, it might be the most challenging hike in a major Iowa city. Rated as moderate, it contains some uneven terrain that takes you into the wilderness.
