Practice Your Serve On Iowa's Grass Court That's Just Like Wimbledon

If you grow is, they will come. That is what the Kuhn Family has discovered on their Charles City farm. A childhood dream led Mark Kuhn to build a grass tennis court that’s a perfect replica of the famous Wimbledon grass court. It’s called the All Iowa Lawn Tennis Club and it’s an unexpected sight on an Iowa farm. The court has drawn visitors from around the world and it’s something you have to see to believe.

Charles City is not very close to Wimbledon, although this place tries very hard to bridge the gap. Kuhn as a child in the 1960s listened to Wimbledon broadcasts on his grandfather's shortwave radio. He did chores on a feed lot that would one day make his dreams come true.

Kuhn completed the court in 2003 - it took him 14 months to build. Visitors from all over the world have come to see the court in person.

Kuhn researched turfgrass management at Iowa State University to make the grass perfect. When you're about to serve, watch the glare off the grain bins!

The court is open from Memorial Day to September, but there's no tennis on rainy days.

No farms in the neighborhood have a weathervane like this!

The court takes a lot of work to maintain - Kuhn mows it at least every other day to keep it pristine and create a perfect checkerboard look. He repaints lines weekly and uses a large rolling machine regularly. The result: an Iowa court that's just like Wimbledon!

The All Iowa Lawn Tennis Club is open from Memorial Day – September. To inquire about reservations, you can send the club an email. A replica of Wimbledon in Iowa is a little unusual but it’s not the weirdest thing you’ll find in the Hawkeye State!
