We've researched ghost towns a lot lately, even creating a pretty awesome ghost town road trip through Indiana. However, while some ghost towns are great places to visit, others are a little more impossible to find. None are quite as impossible as the ghost town of Monument City, which currently resides underwater. Never heard of it? Read on to find out more about this underwater ghost town.
Monument City was located on the south side of Huntington County, where the Salamonie Reservoir now resides. While dubbed "Monument City," this former town was pretty small, spanning only about 13 acres and housing approximately 30 residents. Yet, Monument City remained home for these Hoosiers until the 1960s.
One major issue with Monument City was the tendency of Salamonie Lake to flood, causing a real problem for the town and surrounding areas. In 1865, Indiana decided to close the town of Monument City (along with two other towns) to build the Salamonie Reservoir to help prevent flooding. The residents were forced to leave their homes and much of the town was bulldozed and demolished prior to building the reservoir.
What was left of the ghost town of Monument City remained underwater for nearly fifty years, until a severe drought struck in 2012. Most Hoosiers remember how terrible the drought was, but for Monument City, it offered a unique view at an otherwise forgotten underwater ghost town. As the waters receded, Monument City was uncovered, and many structures and sites were revealed. Check out this video to discover more.
