Who says you can't have a beach day in a non-coastal state? I sure don't, and if you've been reading Only In Your State for any amount of time, you probably already know this - but some folks aren't aware (or perhaps they've just never considered it!), and that's who this one goes out to. Indiana just happens to be an awesome state with plenty of opportunities for a beach day; Lake Michigan in particular is known for its beachy beaches and ocean-like vibes. But right now, I'd like to take a moment to appreciate a lesser-known beach than those at beautiful Lake Michigan. If you've never been out to Cagles Mill Lake, you certainly ought to; it's beautiful, it's home to a wondrous beach, and it's quite close to another epic natural wonder as well. Check it out!
Once upon a time, Cagles Mill Lake was formed as Indiana's first flood control reservoir.
Over the years, it turned into a beacon of delights, attracting folks from all over the state (and the Midwest) to come enjoy the clear, cool water. Now, it's a great option for a beach day.
Sure, we might be a bit inland - but you can still enjoy a wonderful beach day.
The shores of this little reservoir are sandy, silty and nice, and you're definitely able to sink your toes in here and there.
If you want to get out on the water, you're not alone - check out the two boat launches on the lake.
Watching the sunset is nice... but watching the sunset on the water is something special. Cagles Mill Lake is one of those wonderful places where you can do exactly that... or, of course, you can admire from the beach.
There are also various places for hiking, fishing, camping, and overall just enjoying the recreation area; it's the perfect little place to get away from it all without going too far from home.
And what beach is complete without water sports galore? Cagles Mill Lake features plenty of room for boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and even waterskiing. Don't let anyone ever tell you you can't waterski in Indiana. You don't need that kind of boring in your life.
Should you decide you never want to leave (same), you can always stay here for a while (well, no more than 14 consecutive days) at one of the numerous excellent camping options.
There are 120 electric sites at the Poplar Grove ground, and 96 non-electric primitive sites as well. And even if lake sports aren't really your thing but you'd still like to swim, no worries - there's a pool here, too!
Overall, Cagles Mill Lake is an awesome place for relaxing and unwinding on a lovely inland beach.
Settle down next to the water, dip your toes in the water, and enjoy - it's not every day you get to kick back and relax waterside like this!
