Initially, when you think about monuments and memorials in Indiana, you think about Indianapolis. After all, our beautiful city is loaded with monuments and memorials in honor of things Hoosiers cherish and want to remember forever. What some people don’t know is we are so much more than just Indianapolis. We have beautiful monuments and memorials scattered all over the state.

1.) Angel Mounds State Historic Site

You can find this historic site in Evansville, Indiana.

2.) Four Freedoms Monument

There are actually several four freedoms monuments in the United States. Evansville, Indiana just happens to be the home of one of them.

3.) Fall Creek Massacre

The Fall Creek Massacre was a name given to a brutal slaughter of a total of nine different Native Americans including four children, three women, and two men. Seven white settlers living in Indiana committed this slaughter. Only six of the men were captured. Four of the six men that were captured were sentenced to a hanging because it was illegal to slaughter Native Americans in Indiana at this time.

4.) Colonel Richard Owen Bust

This bust is a piece of artwork by an American artist named Belle Kinney Scholz. You can see this bust by visiting the statehouse in Indianapolis.

5.) John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge

This is a seven layer, single deck bridge that links Indiana to Kentucky.

6.) Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library

This library is in honor of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., a native Indianapolis artist and writer. You can find this library in downtown Indianapolis.

7.) Madonna of the Trail

This trail consists of 12 different monuments in honor of the pioneer women’s spirit in the United States. Each of these 12 monuments can be found along the National Old Trails Road. The monument in Indiana can be found in Richmond.

8.) George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge

This is yet another bridge connecting Indiana to Kentucky.

9.) Tippecanoe Battlefield Park

The Tippecanoe Battlefield Park monument serves as a preservation of the location where the Battle of Tippecanoe took place in November of 1811.

10.) Indiana State Soldiers and Sailors Monument

This beautiful and massive monument is part of monument circle in downtown Indianapolis.

11.) Medal of Honor Memorial

This is a memorial in honor of everyone who has earned a Medal of Honor. The memorial was originally unveiled on May 28, 1999 which was a Memorial Day weekend.

12.) Pigeon Roost State Historic Site

This historic site is in honor of 24 settlers who were massacred by Indians just after the War of 1812 started. You can find this historic site right between Henryville and Scottsburg, Indiana. It is also near Underwood, Indiana.

13.) Porter County Memorial Opera Hall

You can find this very beautiful memorial opera hall in Valparaiso, Indiana where it was constructed in 1893.

14.) Purdue Memorial Union

You can find this memorial in West Lafayette, Indiana as part of the Purdue campus. The memorial was opened in 1924. It is in honor of students of the University who fought in World War I.
