Illinois is full of incredible, unique dining options, which is one of my favorite things about living here. While everyone knows Chicago is home to some of the country’s best fine dining (and the best Italian beef and hotdogs, period), there are plenty of other cities that have perfected the art of a memorable meal. One of my must-visit dining locations is less than 2 hours outside Chicago — where you’ll not only get amazing food, but an artistic, immersive experience. In fact, those who have tried it often consider it the best Italian restaurant in Rockford, Illinois.
For more than 50 years, Lino's has been serving up incredible thin-crust pizza and classic Italian dishes from its 5611 E. State St. restaurant — which is a work of art, itself. Since 1972, the location has been headed by three generations of the Battista family and a team of loyal employees, some of whom have served over 40 years with the restaurant.
A major appeal of the eatery is the decor and theme from the inside out. Beginning with the building's design and iconic wine glass-shaped neon sign, it immediately feels like you've left Illinois for Italy.
But my favorite room in the restaurant is this painstakingly themed dining room, which includes replicas of famous Italian ruins, special lighting, wall murals that depict an Italian city, architectural flourishes, and hidden booths that seamlessly work into the walls.
I love feeling like I have my own unique dining experience here, as no two tables give off the same vibe. This is one of the more extravagant tables, made to resemble a Roman colosseum.
It may be a little over-the-top, but that's what makes it so special. This place has long been a go-to for anniversaries, engagements, dates, and family gatherings.
Its popularity makes sense to me — there is clearly tons of love, attention, and detail poured into every inch of Lino's. Arches, pillars, a mix of materials, and a perfect color palette truly make it feel like you are in another country.
Gorgeous tall, red leather booths line another part of the dining room, with beautiful gated doorways leading to yet another discoverable part of this recreated old-world restaurant.
If you're not already on board because of the decor, then the mouthwatering pizza and hand-crafted dishes should do the trick. I personally love their crispy thin-crust pizza, which is cooked in a traditional, old oven.
Another chef's kiss comes from the hefty prime rib. It's no wonder Lino's has consistently won annual "Best Of" awards from both Rockford and Chicago, and has been recognized by the Illinois Board of Tourism as one of the top restaurants in the state.
