Garden of the Gods Wilderness is as scenic as it gets in Illinois. This 3,300-acre preserve has some of the most fascinating sandstone rock formations, so it's no wonder why it's the most photographed part of the state. There are a number of trails throughout the park and the Whiskey Cave Loop Trail is one that will lead you to the numerous rocks, caves, a waterfall, and epic viewpoints of the surrounding wilderness. We must warn you, though, that this is a difficult hike and being prepared is an absolute necessity.
Whiskey Cave Loop Trail is a 6.5-mile hike that is rated difficult and has an elevation gain of 990 feet. It is part of the Shawnee National Trail System.
The terrain is challenging in some areas with long uphill climbs, and if there was recent rain, it will be muddy and slippery. However, there are several rather easy miles. This trail will take you on an adventure through forests and to many of the rock formations that have been carved by the elements over the past 320 million years.
A hike along this trail will certainly not be boring! You will start to see a variety of otherworldly rock formations, some of which have names.
Arch of the Gods, Buzzard Slot Cave, the 40-foot-tall Rhombus Rock, and Mushroom Rock are just a few of the ancient rocks you will see along with Whiskey Cave Falls.
The most mesmerizing scene is perhaps the 20-foot tall Mushroom Rock which can be found along the bluff line.
The Whiskey Cave Loop Trail is quite popular among backpackers, horseback riders, and those who enjoy primitive camping. If you do choose to hike this trail, make sure you are prepared with plenty of water, bug repellent, sunscreen, a sturdy pair of hiking boots, long pants, and anything else you need.
Although this is a difficult hike, if you're an avid hiker and up for the challenge, it is worth it just to see all the fascinating rock formations along the way!
