After A Hike On Illinois’ Severson to Funderberg Trail, Board Trolley 36 For A Memorable Adventure
Illinois is home to so much fun that it can be hard to decide which adventure to take. One way to witness what makes Illinois so special is to hike through some of the beautiful countryside scenery and take a rail journey through one of its wonderful towns.
The trail that leads from the Severson Dells Nature Center to the newly opened Funderberg Forest Preserve is one of the best places to see some of the beautiful outdoors that the great state of Illinois is built on.
Located near Rockford, Illinois, this 2.3-mile trail is rated as easy with stretches of gravel, dirt, grass, and even a beautiful bridge that is a perfect photo opportunity. This trail is open year-round and is beautiful in all seasons.
Perfect for large groups and solo explorers alike, this popular trail is great for birding, cross-country skiing, and hiking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of the day. Dogs are not allowed on this trail.
To enjoy this lovely trail, begin your journey at the Severson Dells Forest Preserve parking lot and walk east.
When you find trail marker #3 turn left, then turn left again at marker #4. Spend some time in the pristine prairie and then turn left again at the northeastern corner of the prairie loop to continue on the Funderberg Forest preserve.
For those looking for more adventure, feel free to explore along the trail and also on the old logging roads that criss-cross the trail in several places.
Once you arrive at Funderberg Forest Preserve, there are even more opportunities to explore, with a network of trails that stretches more than 8 miles! Remember to tread lightly and leave no trace so that others can enjoy this beautiful outdoor space.
After you hit the trails, drive into Rockford and climb aboard the beloved Trolley Car 36. The rail-based Trolley Car 36 offers visitors a scenic ride down Madison Street and along the Rock River Recreation Path.
Operated as part of the Rockford Park District in Rockford, Trolley Car 36 provides rides to the public on select dates throughout the year. The Trolley offers guests a great way to travel along the banks of the Rock River, with easy access to Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens.
The Trolley is available for rental for private parties, as are the main building and patio of the station where the trolley is housed, perfect for weddings and other large gatherings.
For solo riders, the trolley is a spacious open-air way to get a good look at The Rock River and maybe even make a friend.
On days that the trolley is running, passengers may hop aboard at any one of the stops between Riverview Park and the Symbol and enjoy a joyful journey for free.
