If you’re ever in the Chicago area and looking for an easy hike in Illinois that's sure to impress, then the Saint Louis Canyon Trail is for you. Just two miles south of Utica or 1.5 hours from Chicago, this lush trail ends at a lovely waterfall. It's in a canyon formed by glacial melting, and the short-and-sweet hike will leave you feeling refreshed and invigorated. Nestled in Starved Rock State Park, the trailheads give you the option of a short 10-minute hike directly to the waterfall or the full three-mile scenic trail; regardless of which option you choose, you're in for one of the best hikes in Illinois!
The entrance to the various trailheads in the park guides you over a wooded bridge where you’re already
surrounded by lovely trees!
The trail meanders through White Pine, Canada Yew, and Northern White Cedar trees.
The smooth sandstone cliffs are pocked with little nooks and crannies of all sizes, including the
occasional cave.
You can see the tenacity of nature as trees will take root within the very rocks!
Various stone outcroppings provide beautiful spots to sit and rest and make for nice places for birders
and artists to do their thing!
When the creek is running, you can stop at these small bridges and listen to the peaceful trickling.
This is a good sign! Perhaps the waterfall will be flowing as well!
At last, we are rewarded with this refreshing waterfall. The sandstone cradles this waterfall, providing a serene pool to cool your feet.
If you like, you can even take an impromptu shower to cool off!
Starved Rock State Park trails are open from 7:00 am to sunset every day. The Visitor Center is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. except on bank holidays.
