Though Illinois is home to Chicago, the third largest city in the United States, most of the state is rolling prairies and farmland. While it may not sound as flashy as big-city fine dining, a fresh-cooked country meal feels good in the belly and the soul. With farms spread across the state, Illinois has the perfect mixture of locally-grown ingredients, historic barns, and family recipes to form some creative — and delicious — rustic restaurants. For those who want a hearty plate of country favorites, this gorgeously restored barn restaurant in Mount Prospect, Illinois, is definitely worth checking out.
The Red Barn Restaurant and Brewery calls a lovingly restored 10,000-square-foot barn home. It's become a favorite for food and beer lovers alike.
The Gothic-style barn was designed in the style of another 1933 barn, which featured rafters made of Douglas Fir trees. It also has an original 38-foot silo and a tractor, which visitors love to take photos beside.
The interior showcases breathtaking woodworking made even dreamier with strung lights. The building first opened under the name Farmer Cooper's Chicken Restaurant in 1967.
You can eat on the ground floor or in the loft, which offers stunning views of the barn. On the main floor, rustic touches meet modern amenities to offer convenience and charm.
To eat, nothing says dinner on the farm like a plate full of buttermilk fried chicken, complete with airy mashed potatoes and smothered in country gravy.
The eatery also serves bar classics like wings, burgers, and pizza — plus other country favorites like macaroni and cheese, fish and chips, and the Barn BLT.
On the lighter side is a fresh chopped salad with bacon, egg, cheese, and veggies. Add ranch dressing to truly show off your country spirit.
As a brewery, the barn also serves a long list of house-brewed beers, local craft beers, special cocktails, and almost anything else a thirsty customer may want to imbibe.
Patrons can also check out the restaurant's pool tables to play a few rounds before, during, or after a snack.
The diner also has live music, games, darts, and other entertainment for guests to enjoy throughout the year.
During warmer months, folks can graze their meals on the unique patio, which offers a complimentary side of sunshine with your dining experience.
