It's that time of year when scary movies are all over the place. From theatres to cable networks, tales of ghosts, murderers, and evil places abound to fright and delight. For lovers of Halloween and all things scary, this list of nine horror movies filmed in Illinois will give you all the nightmares.

Illinois is a popular place for shooting movies, and these creepy films are must-sees. Check 'em out:

1. Child's Play 2

Filmed in 1990 in Chicago, this is the second film in the Chucky franchise. The movie is about a doll possessed with the soul of a serial killer who murders everyone in sight. It gained a cult following and is one of many films about the red-haired doll.

2. The Amityville Horror

This remake of the 1979 classic was done in 2005 and was filmed around St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the Sequoit Creek Lodge in Antioch as well as areas around Chicago, Buffalo Grove, and Fox Lake. The movie is based off the true tale of a man who shot all six members of his family on the south shore of Long Island, New York in the town of Amityville. The house the family was murdered in is reported as haunted by those who tried to live in it afterwards.

3. Poltergeist III

This popular film's third installment was released in 1988. Filming locations included the Francis W. Parker School, the John Hancock Center, and Water Tower Place in Chicago. The films are about a band of ghosts controlled by a demon that reek havoc on a family in attempt to posses a young girl.

4. The Grudge 2

This sequel to the remake of a Japanese film about what happens when someone is murdered due to another's grudge was released in 2006 and shot around parts of Chicago. The grudge lives on and haunts the home in which a wife and her child were murdered by her husband.

5. Damien: The Omen II

This sequel was mostly filmed in downtown Chicago and was released in 1978. It is about a demon disguised as a child who causes awful things to happen to those who do not please him. The film is so popular, remakes were made in the 2000s.

6. The Relic

Filming locations for this flick included Lower Wacker Drive and other downtown Chicago spots as well as in Northbrook. It was released in 1997 and is one of the best science-fiction horror movies ever. It is about a detective and scientist who pair up to save Chicago from a mutant bug living in a museum.

7. A Nightmare On Elm Street

This remake of the original 1984 film came out in 2010 and was shot at many locations around the state, including Bluff City Cemetery in Elgin and John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights. It is about a man who was killed in a house fire who returns to terrorize his old neighborhood.

8. The Unborn

Filmed in 2009, this movie is about a spirit that is believed to be the ghost of an unborn twin but who turns out to be a demon. It was filmed in Kankakee, Lake Forest, Chicago, and Montrose with many scenes shot at Liberty High School.

9. The Rite

The filming of this 2011 movie took place in Blue Island, a beautiful town along the Mississippi River. This is an image of a vintage hospital that still stands amongst other historic relics in the town. The film is based on real events and is about a practicing priest who meets a woman struggling with possession and who becomes possessed himself.
